Jeff James

man in the stand:

Jeff was born and raised in Western Kentucky and is a successful business man in the river shipping industry. Hunting runs through his veins so when Jeff is not in his daytime office, he can be found in a nearby stand. Although big whitetails are Jeff's passion, he is a believer in land and game management and the results are evident: in 2010 Jeff harvested three whitetail bucks over 170" on camera. As the newcomer to High Places, Jeff is certainly setting the bar on big buck hunting. But, Jeff is not limited to just whitetails – mule deer and elk hunting are also on his list of favorites. When he is not in a stand or behind a desk, he enjoys watching MMA, doing jiu-jisu and showing his kids the great outdoors.

Hunting Tips

Hunting Tip #1   Picking the right release

In hunting, a lot of your success is based on being confident in your equipment. And a lot of times everything comes down to the shot. When you’re an archery hunter, there’s nothing more important than your release. For me that’s going to be a Tru-Fire caliper release. It releases the same way every time and it fits me. Regardless of what kind of release you use, make sure it fits you nicely, is adjusted, and you feel confident in.

Hunting Tip #2   Early season scouting

Prior to the opening of the whitetail season in Ohio my Leupold binoculars never leave my truck. The bean fields, that’s the key. That’s where the deer are coming out to in the late evenings and you can learn a lot about the patterns of the deer and the size of the deer by just using your binoculars. I’m traveling around to all the areas I hunt and scouting around in the late evenings. I found some of my biggest bucks that way.

Hunting Tip #3   Prepping your clothes for season
When I get my Scent-Lok clothes out for the first time at the beginning of the hunting season I definitely want to wash it in Eliminex laundry detergent. And then for me, I like to hang it out in the open air so it can dry in a natural environment. I think that’s important. Then I fold them up, drop them in the Scent-Lok tote box, seal it up, and I’m good to go.
